CHILL OUT AT LÖYLY, PORTLAND’S MUST-TRY SAUNA HOUSE & RELAXATION STUDIO

Content creation for Fitt Wellness Magazine. Below is a sample of my work as a journalist for Fitt.

We’ll go out on a limb here and say that you probably experience stress. While a stiff drink or pint of ice cream certainly can take the edge off, it’s not the remedy you need for that busy mind.

You ready to disconnect yet? Just for a few hours? Double check your email one more time, check your text messages, and lock it up while you walk through the nondescript doors of Löyly on Martin Luther King Blvd. or SE 21st Ave. You won’t regret it.

THE HEAT OF THE SAUNA

It’s hard to imagine the sacred warm haven that rests behind the doors of Löyly, Northeast. Snuggled into a bustling Mississippi neighborhood, this Scandinavian-styled sauna house is designed to take you far away from your daily hustle. It’s our new favorite remedy.

Creatively named, “Löyly” translates to “the heat of the sauna”, but they offer so much more. Walk into this beautifully minimal industrial sauna house with gorgeous floral arrangements and natural light stretching across the walls and floors. Grab the white bathrobe, the black flip flops, your locker key, and the metal drinking cup that they provide you on your way in. And don’t worry about your stuff because every guest gets a full-sized locker with a key. That’s right — big enough for your bike helmet, rain jacket, computer, groceries, climbing gear… whatever.

INTROVERT AND EXTROVERTS WELCOME

The Northeast location brings you two saunas: a social and a silent sauna, for the extrovert or introvert within you. In between this sauna sandwich, you’ll find a sky-lit room with a cold shower. It’s tempting… yet still so hard to say yes to. It’s freezing. SE’s spot is quite similar, down to the décor, but swap your social saunas for a steam room.

Outside the saunas, there’s nothing to do but rest, read, connect with friends, and check out their menu of goodies. From bath salts and foot soaks to massages and facials, their body-loving offerings are quite reasonable. They also serve healthy snacks and tea in the lounge area.

LESS IS MORE

Löyly is by appointment only, and thank god. It’s a small space that is regulated to keep the experience casual and comfortable. Check the schedule to find a men-only, women-only, or all gender day. Whichever suits you. Speaking of which, suits are required for co-gender days and optional for single gender.

Whatever you do, get comfortable! It’s the Löyly way.

What’s the perfect Portland spot? Probably somewhere bright with high ceilings and natural light. Quality-obsessed, detail-oriented coffee service. Oh, and bicycles — definitely bicycles.

We’re, of course, describing Breadwinner Cafe, an awesome little cafe off of North Williams. It’s the workshop and caffeine that fuels the famous hand-made, custom-made Breadwinner Cycles.

Almost nothing gets as Portland as this.

PORTLAND MADE, PORTLAND PROUD

If you don’t know by now, Breadwinner bicycles are premier Portland-made bikes. The workshop where these bikes are meticulously crafted is connected to the cafe with a huge window lined with a bar and stools. In you’re in for a tune-up, watch these experts tinker with your bike while you see to your caffeine fix — this is the only place in town with a front row seat.

And we can’t forget the quality coffee.

THE PERFECT CAFE

It’s small, quiet, entertaining, and undeniably delicious. Let’s break that down a little though.

Breadwinner Cafe serves Water Avenue espresso and food. It’s food for bikers by bikers. That means it’s food to fuel your upcoming ride or nourish your post-ride exhausted body.

The menu itself is pleasantly simple and carefully crafted. Here, you’ll can find bagels, muesli, Columbia Gorge Juices, and an array of hearty sandwiches locally sourced and prepared in house. They also offer a select list of wine and beer from local favorites Baerlic Brewing, Grochau Cellars, and Ex Novo Brewing Co.

Sounds pretty amazing, right? Well, just know this: you don’t need to have a problem to grab a hot Breadwinner blend with a friend. See you there.
